societal expectations

they say don’t give in to peer pressure, yet they expect us to conform to societal norms. your school is somewhat your society (condition in which the members of a community live together for their mutual benefit) innit? so isn’t peer pressure basically societal pressure?

here’s my thoughts. you’re in a classroom and your teacher asks a question, “does any one disagree?” You raise your hand up, look around and see everyone’s  hand is down, and now they are all staring at you with disdain, so you awkwardly retrieve your hand and swap your stance to agreement.

you’re working in a farm and you’re wearing a pair of pants, you look around and see every one is wearing a skirt, and they are all staring at you with disdain, so you awkwardly try to hide yourself and pretend you’re wearing pink.

it’s inherently the same argument, innit?

oh the irony.

and for the record, yes we are expected to conform. non-conformists are rebels, and what is a rebel, in essence? some one who breaks the rules, “a person who resists any authority, control, or tradition” – dictionary.com. tradition, in other words, societal norms. rulebreakers must be punished. hence, lest we be punished, we must conform.
